Der Ring des Nibelungen, known more simply as the Ring Cycle, was a collection of four operas written by Richard Wagner. They're used in the soundtracks, mentioned by, and listened to by Ludwig Dieter in both Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves.
History[]
Wagner spent nearly half his life writing and composing the sequence, which is composed of four operas.
Das Rheingold tells of Alberich, a dwarf who plunged into the depths of the Rhine River, tricked the three Rhine maidens out of their gold, and used it to craft a ring so powerful even the gods wanted it for themselves. Die Walküre is about unwitting siblings, Siegmund and Sieglinde, who fell in love. Odin, enraged at his children's love, sent his daughter, Brünnhilde, to kill Siegmund. After seeing their love, she instead helped them, for which she was stripped of her immortality and cast out of Valhalla by her father. In Siegfried, Siegfried slayed the dragon Fafnir, then killed Alberich, creator of the Rhinegold ring, who had raised him as a child. He later met Brünnhilde, and the two fell in love. Though, in Götterdämmerung Siegfried died, and Brünnhilde threw herself onto his funeral pyre.
The Ring Cycle went down in history as the pinnacle of operatic achievement.[1][2]
Legacy[]
Hans Wagner eventually created four masterpiece safes based on the works of Richard Wagner and named them after the operas: the Rheingold, Valkyrie, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Ludwig Dieter, obsessed with the Wagner safes, was naturally interested in the operas by extension, so when setting out to crack the safes, he listened to pieces from each of their respective operas just before the safecracking.
