Infection manipulation was the ability to spread an infection - specifically that of the zombie plague, and especially via a bite. This was a standard ability among zombies, but the effects of the infection were greater the closer the biter was to the original source of the infection.

Zeus, as the original zombie, had the most potent bite. He alone could convert people to alphas, which were stronger variants of the typical zombie. On at least one occasion he was even able to infect a person through a scratch, which is not a skill any other zombie has shown. By the end of his life, Zeus had infected well over 100 people and animals.[1][2]
Athena turned many humans to zombies, as Lilly witnessed, but they always came back as shamblers.[1]
