Martin, Army of the Dead

Martin was Bly Tanaka's head of security who joined the team hired to venture into zombie-infested Las Vegas to retrieve $200 million in cash. He was secretly given a second mission, which was to retrieve a living alpha head. Lilly tricked him and he was unable to escape the city with the head, being killed by Valentine instead. Martin was portrayed by Garret Dillahunt in Army of the Dead.

Biography

Götterdämmerung heist

"I don't trust that guy. You know why he was hired? He was hired to keep tabs on us, for when we open the safe, that we didn't take the money and run."

As Bly Tanaka's head of security, Martin was the man Bly trusted to join the Las Vengeance group as they raided the quarantine zone and make sure they stay on task, successfully returning the money to Bly. That was his role on the surface, anyway. In reality Martin was secretly tasked with obtaining the living head of Athena. He breached the quarantine zone with the team.

Chambers confronts Martin

Several of the team members were uneasy with his presence due to their assumption that he was there to act as big brother for Tanaka. After Chambers made it clear she didn't trust him, Martin seized an opportunity to mislead her into a swarm of shamblers, which led to her downfall. Mikey Guzman suspected foul play, but couldn't prove anything. Later, Martin struck a deal with Lilly wherein he would make sure all the people of McCarran Quarantine Camp would be cleared to leave the camps, and in exchange she would help him procure a vial of Athena's blood.

Martin captures Athena

Upon restraining the queen with Lilly, Martin took the opportunity to decapitate Athena and take her head for Tanaka. He stowed it in his bag and he and Lilly rejoined the group in the casino. When everyone was distracted by the opening of the Götterdämmerung, Lilly swapped the head with a cash counter to prevent future zombie outbreaks. In response to his queen's decapitation, Zeus sent his horde after the Las Vengeance team, and they stormed Bly's Casino.

Martin is mauled by Valentine

Martin was quick to leave, and having a key card, could use an access hatch. Lilly was close behind, but he closed the gate on her, claiming he planned to kill Marianne Peters and leave everyone behind, seeing as he had for what he had come. He rushed outside, but noticed something off about his bag. He quickly dug into it to find the cash machine where Athena's head should have been. No sooner had he processed this information than the zombie tiger, Valentine, approached him from behind. He was flung aside before he could react, and slowly torn apart by the undead beast, too badly to return as a zombie.

Abilities

• Social manipulation: Martin's true purpose during the Götterdämmerung heist wasn't to support the heist, but to branch of and retrieve an alpha head. He tricked Lilly into helping him acquire one and left the team behind to get away with Athena's head. He was mostly successful, but Chambers saw through him early on, and Lilly eventually did as well, swapping the head with a money counter. He was able to manipulate Chambers into her own death with a bit of luck, but was too late to deal with Lilly's interference.
• Pilotry: Martin is capable of flying helicopters. During the Götterdämmerung heist, he planned to kill Marianne Peters, the team's pilot, and fly himself to safety. He never made it to the helicopter.

Equipment

• FN SCAR-L CQC: Martin's primary weapon was an FN SCAR-L CQC equipped with an ACOG sight.
  • FN40GL: The FN40GL is an under-barrel grenade launcher with snare rounds attached to the FN SCAR-L CQC. Martin used a snare round to capture Athena.
• Defender: Martin's personal vehicle was a Land-Rover Defender.

• A deleted scene from Army of the Dead featured Martin looking over Zeus' military record with Bly Tanaka, including examining an x-ray.
• While the rest of the crew generally have highly personalized and customize weapons, having integrated them into their lives over the years, Martin's are more clinical. He uses high-quality, out-of-the-box gear purely for the sake of doing the job.
