The film was confirmed on July 21, 2021, in association with The Stone Quarry's first-look deal with Netflix.[1]
On November 1, 2021, Zack Snyder and Matthias Schweighöfer held a public conversation on Vero to promote Army of Thieves. In this conversation, Snyder confirmed that Vanderohe's reason for heading to Mexico City was to hunt down Torrance, who started the zombie plague. Christian Slater's involvement in Planet of the Dead to reprise the role of Torrance was not confirmed.[2]
Following the release of the director's cuts of Rebel Moon on August 2, 2024, Tom Conroy interviewed Snyder on a variety of Snyder's work, including Planet of the Dead, which Snyder said would involve a "journey to another world." Planet would not be his next movie at this time, but he still hoped to get back to it soon.[3]
