Die Walküre, also known as the Valkyrie or Walkurie, was the second of four one-of-a-kind safes created by famous safe designer Hans Wagner. It was the target of the biggest heist in Army of Thieves.
History[]
"The first act of the story takes place on Earth as the children of Odin or Wotan, the siblings, Siegmund and Sieglinde, happen to cross one another and fall in love. They did not know at the time they were brother and sister. The second act of the story takes place far above Earth, in a kingdom meant to represent Valhalla. As the gods plan a course of action, and Wotan sends his daughter Brünnhilde to kill Siegmund; but moved by his love for Sieglinde, she does not, and helps him instead. This angers Odin, who decrees the most dire of punishment: Stripping Brünnhilde of her immortality and casting her out of her Valhalla. I believe the locks are to be solved in the order of the story and then the cycle begins anew."

The inner workings of the Valkyrie
At some point the Valkyrie was designed by Hans Wagner. It's the second of his masterpiece safes, named after the second opera of the Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner: Die Walküre. The third act of the opera opens with "The Ride of the Valkyries", which is one of Wagner's most well-known works. Waltraute, whose name is engraved on the safe, is the most prominent Valkyrie in the opera. The safe was owned by Bly Tanaka and used in NPIB Prague, reportedly storing $40 million.[1]
Valkyrie heist[]

Sebastian cracks the Valkyrie
Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert and Gwendoline Starr met at the elevator to the Valkyrie vault in NPIB Prague, and at the bottom they were met with armed guards. Gwen fought them off in front of the safe and bound them, then Sebastian got to work. The process was made longer by a minor slipup that put the Valkyrie in a warning state, meanwhile the guards became suspicious and Brad Cage launched "plan B" in the lobby above to draw their attention. Sebastian managed to crack the safe, and he and Gwen used the chaos of Brad's bank robbery to flee with the other bank patrons.
The Valkyrie was presumably decommissioned in Geneva shortly after the robbery, as was Bly Tanaka's plan for it.[1]

Trivia[]
- The safe is named for Die Walküre, the second piece in Richard Wagner's opera, Der Ring des Nibelungen.
- The English name for Die Walküre is The Valkyrie.
- In the film Army of Thieves, three different spellings are given for the safe. "Die Walküre" is used on the original blueprints and the safe itself, while "the Valkyrie" is how it is usually pronounced in the film and spelled at certain moments. Meanwhile, the third spelling of "Walkurie" is also utilized at least once during Korina Dominguez's presentation.
- In the trailer captions for the film, the safe's name is spelled "Walkurie." This was changed to "Valkyrie" in the film captions.
- The safe has 235,541,346,623 possible combinations.
