WrestleMania Backlash is a pay-per-view livestreamed event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The May 16, 2021, Backlash event featured a gimmick wrestling match between Damian Priest and the Miz, in which a small horde of zombies attacked the ring, and the wrestlers were forced to divert their attention from the match. The Miz was later eaten alive by the zombies. This match was produced to promote Army of the Dead, and the zombie makeup was provided by the Army team, Fractured FX. The crossover event is purely promotional, not indicated to be canon either to the Armyverse or WWE, as the Miz later returned to wrestling unharmed by the zombies and the zombies existed beyond the scope of their Armyverse quarantine zone. Dave Bautista is notably an ex-performer of the WWE.
The event streamed on Peacock, where it was the most-viewed live event of 2021 apart from the Super Bowl. Stephanie McMahon, the chief brand officer for WWE, cited the Army of the Dead crossover as an example of what separates "cluttered" sports games with the integrated entertainment of WWE.[1]
